National Caregivers’ Month is observed annually in November. This year Alpha Kappa Alpha’s
Community Impact Day, was observed on November 15th. The EGO Sorors on the Care for the
Caregivers subcommittee decided to recognize caregivers in our chapter and the community by
presenting caregiver baskets. We reviewed and discussed items we could put in the basket to
show appreciation, to recognize and encourage those who care for others to care for themselves.
We planned methodically with love and care; we compiled a list of useful and unique items to
put in the 38 caregiver baskets. The identified items were purchased and sorors met at the Bob
Harrison Center on November 12th to carefully pack the beautifully arranged baskets that
were delivered on November 15th. Some of the items in the baskets were: the booklet-Our Daily
Bread, large print-word search puzzle books, mugs, coffee, bottle water, punch and lemonade
packets, juice pouches, healthy snacks, hand sanitizer, lotion, cozy lounge socks, a specially
designed caregiver bookmark from Epsilon Gamma Omega with tips and information for the
caregiver, and a personal note card for each caregiver with a gift card from a superstore tucked
inside. This year’s community Impact Day was eventful for EGO’s Care for the Caregivers
subcommittee and the individuals we recognized. The subcommittee enthusiastically lived up to
the goal of the Care for the Caregiver Program, “taking care of those who take care of others”.
This event was well received by the caregivers. When the baskets were presented, they smiled,
laughed, cried, and said, “thank you.”
