                        Chapter 3

               Henri
H er eyes increase in size. She probably thinks I can read her mind. What

in the hell is wrong with you? I chastise myself. One of my exes told me
that I had a hero complex and my actions at that moment makes me feel
inclined to explore that theory. I’ve just met her, and I am already saying yes to a
question that I haven’t heard. I try to regain control over this situation. I can’t
commit to something big. I’m going to be a father soon, and despite my many
objections, I really am willing to try to make it work with Cassie. I smile when the
perfect recovery pops into my head.
“Yes. I will allow you to call me Henry.” I really don’t mind. Some people
already assume they can call me Henry. I only correct people I don’t like. I still think
it is cute that she is considerate enough to ask. She nods and smiles. I gesture to her
outfit. “Let me guess; you caught that John Hughes movie marathon Sunday.”

She winks and taps her nose. “I felt inspired.” Her body relaxes as I intend.
“Nailed it,” I say before pressing the issue. “What else did you want to ask me?”
I decide to get to the point. I’ve been curious too long.

“Well…” She pauses and takes a deep breath. “I was wondering…” Wondering
what! I want to yell. Instead, I sip water to keep my hands and mouth busy. I did
not get this close just for her to say, “Never mind” because I scared her off.
She tries again. “I’ve been toying with the idea for a while, but this morning
was a reality check.” I nod, not yet following her train of thought. “You see, I have
a bit of a dilemma. Getting to my office was physically the hardest thing I’ve done
in a long time…” My inner teenager suppresses a giggle at ‘hardest thing.’
