Chapter 9

                                            Focusing on Fundamentals

Discipleship is not a program. It is not a ministry.
It is a lifelong commitment to a lifestyle

Discipleship speaks more to a particular lifestyle than to a specialized occupation.
It is about the intentional training of people who voluntarily submit to the lordship
of Christ and want to become imitators of Him in thought, word and deed.
Discipleship, in other words, is about being and reproducing spiritually mature
zealots for Christ. A zealot is one who does not do things out of habitat, simply
going through the motions. He is one who possesses a passion and true belief in
what they are doing; they move willingly and with purpose and focus. There is an
unshakeable belief that what they are doing is right and meaningful.

Let me provide an illustration. You and I are followers of many different people,
organizations, activities, ideas etc. For instance, I am a follower of the New York
Jets football team. When they win a game I'm happy for a few moments, and then
I get on with my life. When the Jets lose a game, I am disappointed for a few
moments but then get on with my life. I am not a Jets zealot, a person who is
single-mindedly invested in the day-to-day fortunes of that team. I think we all can
               identify with this illustration.

Let's now contrast this with being a follower of Jesus, especially with what it
meant to be in the elite group of twelve. Each of the twelve abandoned their
profession. Each lived a simple lifestyle, having few possessions and having no real
permanent residence. They learned new principles constantly. They suffered
persecution. Their training was for an unspecified period of time. There were no
textbooks on which they could rely so they had to constantly pay attention, to be
alert and retain all the information presented during their training stage. In short,
they had no life apart from what they were being trained to do.

Unfortunately, the church in today's society has many followers of Christ in the
sense that I follow the Jets. We are in the church for the moment! Jesus however,
is seeking people who are absolutely serious about becoming new creations in Him.
Discipleship is not a program. It is not a ministry. It is a lifelong commitment to a
               lifestyle.
