To Kill a Mockingbird is a spiel about growing up. The main character is a
young girl named Scout Finch who is 6 when the book begins and 8 during
its finale. The novel denotes her growing up and what she learns in her life
over the course of those two years. Throughout the course of this book, she
recollects her childhood in Maycomb, Alabama. She lives with her widowed
father, her 10-year-old brother Jim and the house cook Calpurnia. Atticus,
a lawyer, does his best to instill in his children proper manners and respect
for everyone, regardless of class or race. Scout and Jim spend much of
their summertime with their friend Dill spying on their reclusive neighbor
Boo Radley.
Many characters in the novel face physical or mental challenges like Tom
Robinson’s mangled left arm, Jim’s broken arm due to Bob Ewell, Boo
Radley’s damaged spirit, Atticus’s poor eyesight, etc. which illustrates the
weaknesses all of us have inflicted in through the course of life. Boo has
been living as a recluse for many years and desires to connect to the
outside world. He leaves gifts for Jim and Scout in the knothole of the tree
as a way of connecting with them without allowing himself to become
vulnerable. 100
