                                        Renal function testing

                                                 (Creatinine)

❖ Creatinine is a breakdown product of creatine

                                    phosphate in muscle.

❖ It is usually produced at a constant rate by the body

                                    (depending on muscle mass).

❖ Healthy kidneys filter creatinine out of the blood into

                                    urine.

                                                Blood level Urine level
               Normal
                                   Females 0.5 to 1.0 mg/dl
                 level 1-3 g/day
                                    Males 0.7 to 1.2 mg/dl

❖ Calculation of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) as an

important indicator of renal health because it is excreted

from the body entirely by the kidneys.

❖ Creatinine test is ordered for the following reasons:

                                1. To make a diagnosis if signs or symptoms of kidney

             Diagnostic disease are present.

value 2. To screen for kidney disease in patients with diabetes,

high blood pressure, or other conditions that increase the

                                    risk of kidney diseases.

                                3. To monitor kidney disease treatment or progression.

                                4. To monitor for side effects of drugs that may include

kidney damage or altered kidney function.
