                                                    Sample Hemolysis

               Hemolysis  releases  the  cell  contents  into  plasma  and,  consequently,  the

               concentrations  of  some  plasma  constituents,  such  as  potassium  and  phosphate

               may be falsely increased
                                           .
                                                                                  :
                                          1.  Avoidable causes of hemolysis
              a)  Squeezing  or  intense  pressure  on  fingertips  or  heel  during  capillary


                  collection
                             .
              b) Retaining tourniquet on arm for longer than 1 minute
                                                                                .

              c)  Failure to separate serum or plasma from cells within 1 hour of collection
                                                                                                      .
              d) Shaking or vigorous inversion of the blood sample.


                                         2.  Unavoidable causes of hemolysis:

            1.  Intravascular hemolysis can result from disorders, such as hemolytic anemia
