                                         Liver function tests (Ammonia)

                  ➢ Background:

                   • Ammonia is produced by the metabolism of amino acids and

                       other compounds which contain nitrogen.

               Ammonia is toxic to the

central nervous system Converted through urea cycle Urea (Less toxic form)

                     (CNS). in the liver into:

                                    Liver dysfunction cause increased ammonia
                                                   level in the blood

                                              (Hyper-ammoinemia).

                                             Hepatic Encephalopathy

Neuropsychiatric abnormalities resulting from the accumulation of neurotoxic

substances in the bloodstream and ultimately in the brain due to advanced liver

               dysfunction.

                                                  Reye’s Syndrome

Rare and fatal pediatric illness defined as acute encephalopathy with liver failure.

The syndrome often begins in the days following recovery from a viral illness during
                                             which aspirin was administered.
