- Grasses
Grasses are fashionable at the moment, and they deserve to be.
They can soften borders, add striking architectural elements, are
suited to mass plantings as groundcover and add that chic
contemporary look to your garden.
Ophiopogons, Carex, Festuca, and Pennisetums all come in various colours
from dark purple-black, to greys, rusty reds, and variegated green yellow or
white combinations. Some are suited to water gardens such as the Cape reeds,
Vetivers, and Juncus while others are extremely drought tolerant such as the
Pennisetums. Bamboos are the giants in the grass group that add that special
feature to a garden. The majority of ornamental grasses are very low
maintenance, and have few problems except for termite damage. Water
requirements differ, although most do like to be watered well, so make sure to
find the right grass for your garden. Try some of these easy to grow grasses:
Ophiopogon japonicus, Carex ‘Evergold’, Pennisetum setaceum and Chrysopogon
zizanioides. Text & photos S.C
