sc gardens - plant enthusiasts
Senecios are an interesting group of plants, because they don’t all share
similar features as is the case in most other genera. This will probably
change in the near future, as plants are frequently being renamed, as
with the ‘String of Pearls’ (below), Senecio rowleyanus, now Curio rowleyanus.
However old names linger on, and for now, there are a range of herbaceous
and succulent plants ranging from the ragworts, Senecio elegans; to
tender shrubs, Senecio cineraria (opposite); to ivy-like Senecio macroglossus, and the
unique-looking Senecio oxyriifolius (indigenous to Botswana).
Senecio is one of the largest genera of flowering plants, and there are about 17
indigenous species recorded in Botswana. There are many succulent species that
are perfect for rockeries like Senecio barbetonicus, a large bushy succulent with vibrant
yellow flowers. Senecio vitalis, S. serpens, and S. haworthii, all have blue-grey leaves and
look wonderful in a rockery. Creepers like, Senecio tamoides and S. macroglossus are
spectacular when in flower, and very easy to grow in the garden. by S.C
