Palapye plant feature - by Lynn Freeman
Yucca elephantipes is the
tallest of the Yuccas,
and native to Mexico.
It has long, sword-like,
yellow-green, evergreen
leaves, which grow in a
rosette from the top of
a bare trunk. It is a large
upright succulent tree
that is commonly
grown in gardens
throughout Botswana.
Unlike other Yucca
varieties, the leaves are
spineless, and it is
incredibly easy to grow,
tolerating our harsh sun-
shine, arid conditions and
frost. It can also be grown
as a container plant.
A study has also found
that it reduces harmful
microbes in the air.
It makes a dramatic
statement in the garden,
and when it flowers, it
really changes the
