Bin Laden, A n investigation by Shomrim, in collaboration with CNN and
Hamas and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists
the Sudanese (ICIJ), published on December 21, 2023, revealed that Hamas’
Money Man chief financier, a Sudanese national named Abdelbasit Hamza,
maintained a series of business interests across Europe and
Uri Blau a partnership in a gold mine with the Egyptian government.
The investigation uncovered details of Hamza’s portfolio
Hamza (circled, photo of businesses in Europe, part of a network of global assets
from the US wanted previously estimated by Sudanese anti-corruption officials as
notices) and Sinwar, worth over $2 billion. The article was posted on CNN’s global
head of Hamas in Gaza. website, and received widespread exposure in Israel, including

Impact: The international impact of this story was
staggering. One month after publication, the European
Union imposed dedicated sanctions against Hamza and five
other individuals suspected of having ties with Hamas and
Palestinian Islamic Jihad. This is the first time that the
European Union has taken such measures against people
linked to these two terrorist organizations.
A few days after the sanctions, Hamza was arrested in
Egypt.
