The Democracy prize on behalf of Shomrim,
was awarded for the first time within Local
Testimony Exhibit, to a photograph that
brought to the forefront one of the basic
rights in a democratic society, the right
to demonstrate and protest against the
18 government. The photo was taken during civil
protests that peaked in the summer of 2020.
Balilty's photo powerfully demonstrates
the determination of a protest facing the
attempts to bring it to an end. The determined
protester, standing with all his might against
the water cannon while hanging on to
Israel's flag vividly demonstrates, perhaps
better than words can express, the country’s
character for which he is fighting for.
