Smith, having grown up in Monterey, was an awesome guide. He quickly took us to the Pacific Coast Highway, where one of the best drives in my life was soon to begin.
Words cannot begin to describe the breath-taking beauty God created. Man’s simple little asphalt tour through it will not do it justice. Around every corner and crest of hill, I just said “Wow. We stopped several times to take pictures, hoping to capture some of the majestic grandeur.
We played follow the leader for a while, with Ric leading and myself bringing up the rear. Soon I’d had enough of look- ing at Jim’s rear end and decided to pass. A quick down shift and Scratchy got to business. I flew by Jim. Staying in the left lane, I had Fred in my sights. His black Cayenne, The Dark Night, was next on my need-to-pass list. Gaining speed in the left lane and gaining on Fred, he moved to the left lane also. My first thought was that Fred was pulling an F1 blocking move, preventing me from passing. Son of a b ----! - no, wait. He is making a move to pass Ric! Ric was oblivious to the two Porsches rap- idly gaining on him. And in the blink of an eye, Fred and I were past. Ric in a 718 Boxster, no-name red, threw his hands in the air as if to call foul in our little game of pass-or-be-passed. See ya, I thought, as Fred and I cruised on down the high- way.
Reaching Big Sur, we thought it was time to turnaround. We were ready for lunch and we needed to stretch our legs again. We pulled into the only restau- rant we could find, Lucia Lodge. Some- times, the least expecting restaurants become the most memorable. This one was perched on the hillside with a long stretched out deck, giving a wonderful view of the ocean. The gentle breeze,
