levels in April 2020 falling by 17% compared with 2019. But this
drop in emission faded away as the world returned to work.
This report stresses that short-term lockdowns are no substitute
for the sustained climate action needed to avoid dangerous
climate change, by limiting global warming to well below 2°C.
It becomes imperative for everyone to begin to take action by
harnessing opportunities that the pandemic has brought on
board:
1. a functional economic system that supports people
without threatening earth's life
2. long-lasting, sustainable habits that are beneficial to
the environment, sustainable partnerships
3. digitally-enabled education, shopping, and remote
work.
In order to avoid a climate crisis, the world must get to zero
emissions by 2050. To accomplish this feat, we must reimagine
agriculture (the way we grow food), clean energy,
manufacturing, consumption, and the way we cool and heat our
buildings without releasing greenhouse gases.
There is hope for the planet's future if everyone takes proper
steps. The looming climate crisis can be prevented, with a
coordinated global effort. The change won't happen overnight,
but our commitment must begin NOW.
