Why A New School
We Need a New School Because…
Our facility is 104 years old and while it has served us well and while we have made repairs and improvements to ensure its
functionality, we cannot overcome some important limitations. The building is simply too small. The infrastructures and
major systems are outdated. There is no room for expansion.
Ÿ Our current main school facility is 104 years old.
Ÿ We use 110% of our facility which means we teach in the halls and on the stage. The standard rate of utilization of
educational space is 80%.
Ÿ We cannot introduce new programs due to the limited classroom space.
Ÿ Our two out-buildings consist of a converted bus garage and a pre-fab building and are both 54 years old.
Ÿ The school does not have a gym thus limiting the development of an athletic program.
Ÿ There is no room for expansion on the 13-acre property. Since Newfield does not have sewerage a sizable piece of the
property must be dedicated to a sewer system.
Ÿ We have extremely limited space for parking. We use the ball fields for highly attended events.
Ÿ Our heating system was originally installed during the 1960s and is outdated and not energy efficient.
Ÿ Our main building does not have air conditioning in the classrooms. This is because our school does not have enough power
for the installation of an air conditioning system. It would cost $60,000 to upgrade the power for the school to support AC.
Ÿ The school does not have a sewer system. The decades old cesspools need to be replaced and upgraded for the price of
$300,000. Currently we have the cesspools cleaned out regularly to keep the system functional since, in addition to the aged
system, our school population has outgrown the system's capacity.
Our Future
Our Plan for Our New School
Our need for a new school is not capricious. In addition to the aged facility that we are outgrowing, we have not been able to
expand our instructional programs, develop a sports program, expand our pre-school program, open an infant care program,
fully develop a performing arts program and add an engineering program. A new facility will enable us to add these programs
and further develop existing programs.
Ÿ ECA plans to develop a Domestic Science class for our students enabling them to explore healthy living, culinary skills,
personal financial management, needlecraft and design
Ÿ ECA plans to develop an Industrial Arts Program where the students will learn how to handle tools, complete woodworking
projects, and explore the building arts while learning how to make simple repairs.
Ÿ While ensuring that our students possess the rudiments to manage personal living, we acknowledge the need to prepare our
children for their technological futures as well. We want to develop an Engineering Program where children can explore
different opportunities in the engineering field including civil engineering, computer science, robotics, and much more.
Ÿ ECA wants to develop an infant to 2-year-old program. Our current school community has expressed a need for this level of
childcare.
Ÿ ECA needs an additional 2-year-old pre-school classroom. The current program fills quickly and we must turn families
away due to our lack of space. We are planning an additional classroom dedicated to meet our growing enrollment needs.
Ÿ We are including a gym in the new school. Currently we do not have a gym at ECA therefore we do not have an Athletic
Program. A new gym will enable us to develop a sports program for our children.
Ÿ We need a real stage. Our stage is a small elevated platform of which we make remarkable use. Even with our limited
resources our performances are amazing. However, with a full stage that includes theatrical lighting and a professional
sound system we would be able to better promote our Performing Arts Program and expand performance opportunities.
Ÿ Currently Art and Music are “on a cart”. This limits the scope of both programs. The new facility will have dedicated
classrooms for both and will include a kiln in the art classroom.
