4. Introduce the theme
“Let’s take a look in the sparkly magic bag and see what clue there is for today’s story.” Take out the checkout laminate. Ask the children the following questions.
a) “What is in this picture?”
b) “Where can we find checkouts?”
c) “I’m going on holiday to the seaside but I don’t have any of the things that I need.
So I need you to help me put the things I need into my shopping trolley. Put your hand up if you can think of something I need to buy so I can go to the seaside.” Choose a volunteer, listen to their suggestion and then ask them to place the item into your imaginary shopping trolley. Repeat, taking suggestions from three more volunteers.
d) “Brilliant. Now I need to take my items to the checkout. What sound is made when the shop assistant puts items through the checkout?” Everyone makes the sound together.
e) “Let’s all pretend to be the shop assistant and put my shopping through the checkout.” Everyone acts out being the shop assistant and putting items through the checkout.
* Running time approx. 2 mins 30 secs.
5. Action song or poem: ‘Shopping Is So Much Fun!’ written by Lucy Milan Davis
Sing the song and encourage the children to join in with the following actions. For the chorus, grip hands in front of you as though pushing a trolley and rock from side to side to the pulse. For the verses, pretend to put things into the trolley in time with the pulse. The actions should all be performed whilst seated to allow you to get through the activity quickly.
