Lesson plan
1. Warm-up: ‘Shake Your Sillies Out’ performed by The Wiggles
See weekly drama activity break down for video and instructions. Make sure to use lots of energy!
* Running time approx. 1 min 45 secs.
2. Focus activity: Name Game
See weekly drama activity break down for instructions.
* Running time approx. 3 mins (‘Let’s make a Circle’ should take a MAXIMUM of 30 seconds).
3. Travel to Storyland
See weekly drama activity break down for instructions.
* Running time approx. 4 mins (‘Let’s make a Circle’ should take a MAXIMUM of 30 seconds).
4. Introduce the theme
“Let’s take a look in the sparkly magic bag and see what clue there is for today’s story.” Take out the tent laminate. Ask the children the following questions.
a) “What is in this picture?”
b) “When do we use a tent?”
c) “Let’s all pitch a tent together now.” Act out pitching a tent as you make lots of
sound effects (e.g. “Ziiip! Clang, clang, clang. Ziiip!”).
d) Ask a volunteer to suggest another item that should be taken camping (e.g. torch,
insect repellent, sunscreen, hiking boots, swimmers, pillow, sleeping bag, food etc.). You act out using the suggested item (using upper body) and the children copy you. Repeat using suggestions from three more volunteers.
* Running time approx. 2 mins 30 secs.
5. Action song or poem: ‘This is the Way We Pitch the Tent’ (tune of ‘Here We Go ‘Round the Mulberry Bush’, traditional)
Sing the song and perform actions as indicated by the lyrics.
This is the way we pitch the tent, Pitch the tent, pitch the tent. This is the way we pitch the tent, When we go a camping.
Ask a volunteer to suggest another activity that can be done when camping. If they need help, offer some suggestions for them to choose from including hiking, building a fire, cooking, washing up, canoeing, swimming and going to sleep. Write a new verse about the volunteer’s chosen activity (e.g. ‘This is the way we build a fire...’). Repeat the process several times.
* Running time approx. 3 mins.
