Verse C
As I was walking down the street,
GC
Down the street, down the street.
A friend of mine I chanced to meet. GC
Hello, hello, hello!
Chorus C
A rig a jig jig and away we go,
GC
Away we go, away we go.
A rig a jig jig and away we go. GC
Hello, hello, hello.
Activities for public classes with parents/carers
1. The adults hold their babies and walk around the room to the pulse. The adults stop walking after 'Hello, hello, hello' and bounce up and down to the pulse of the chorus. You should do the movements to demonstrate and play your melodic instrument at the same time. If your melodic instrument is a keyboard (and so you’re unable to play and do the movements at the same time), you should first sing the song with them acapella to demonstrate and clap your hands during the chorus.
Activities for ELCs and pre-schools Perform ‘Ride a Cock Horse’ instead.
1. The group sits in a circle and walks hands on thighs to the pulse as they sing the verse. After ‘meet’ two toddlers come into the middle, hold hands and bounce up and down, whilst the rest of the group claps hands to the pulse.
2. When the group is confident with the game you accompany the singing and dancing with your melodic instrument.
1. The children walk around the room in one direction to the pulse. After ‘meet’ they quickly find a partner. Ask the staff to help you get the children into pairs if need be. Each pair holds hands and swings around for the chorus (‘A rig a jig jig’ etc.). When the chorus is finished the children let go of their partners and walk around the room to the pulse as individuals again and the song is repeated.
2. As above only you play your melodic instrument.
3. Try different movements for the partner dancing (e.g. the pairs hold hands and jump up and down).
