Lesson plan
1. Warm-up: ‘Shake Your Sillies Out’ performed by The Wiggles
Play the track and perform actions as indicated by the lyrics. Make sure to use lots of energy!
* Running time approx. 1 min 45 secs.
2. Focus activity: Name Game
See weekly drama activity break down for instructions.
* Running time approx. 3 mins (‘Let’s make a Circle’ should take a MAXIMUM of 30 seconds).
3. Travel to Storyland
See weekly drama activity break down for instructions.
* Running time approx. 4 mins (‘Let’s make a Circle’ should take a MAXIMUM of 30 seconds).
4. Introduce the theme
“Let’s take a look in the sparkly magic bag and see what clue there is for today’s story.” Take out the ‘People Who Help Us’ laminate. Ask the children the following questions.
a) “I have a picture with lots of people who help us.” Ask volunteers to tell you who they can see in the picture.
b) “Which vehicle does a police officer drive?” Wait for their response. Everyone pretends to drive a police car and makes the sound of a police car siren.
c) “What sort of a vehicle does a fire fighter drive?” Wait for their response. Everyone pretends to drive a fire engine (using a bigger steering wheel) and makes the sound of a fire engine siren.
d) Hold up the ‘People Who Help Us’ laminate. “Put your hand up if you can tell me how someone in this picture helps us.” Choose a volunteer to answer (they should say the name of the person’s occupation as well as how they help us). You mime an action to represent the job of the chosen person (using upper body) and the children copy you. Repeat using ideas from three more volunteers.
* Running time approx. 2 mins 30 secs.
5. Action song or poem: ‘Bang, Bang, Bang’ (adapted from ‘Rat Tat Tat’ by Edward Hughes and Peter Westmore)
“Now I’m going to teach you a song about people who help us by delivering letters, collecting bins and bringing us bottles of milk! Let’s start with the people who collect our bins! Everyone help me to bang on the floor and make the sound of the bins.” Hit the floor with two flat palms for each “bang” as you sing the verse two times.
Bang, bang, bang, here comes the bin collector, Bang, bang, bang, they’re at the door.
Bang, bang, bang, there go the dustbins,
Bang, bang, bang, outside the door.
