Lesson plan
1. Warm-up: ‘Shake Your Sillies Out’ performed by The Wiggles
Play the track and perform actions as indicated by the lyrics. Make sure to use lots of energy!
* Running time approx. 1 min 45 secs.
2. Focus activity: ‘Yes We Can’ written by Unknown
See weekly drama activity break down for instructions.
* Running time approx. 3 mins (‘Let’s make a Circle’ should take a MAXIMUM of 30 seconds).
3. Travel to Storyland
See weekly drama activity break down for instructions.
* Running time approx. 4 mins (‘Let’s make a Circle’ should take a MAXIMUM of 30 seconds).
4. Introduce the theme
“Let’s take a look in the sparkly magic bag to see what we’re going to do next.” Take out the ‘This Little Piggy’ laminate. “What can you see in my picture?” Perform the rhyme using the well known actions (using fingers rather than toes) and encourage the children to tickle each other at the end.
This little piggy went to market, (hold left hand thumb with right hand)
This little piggy stayed home, (hold left hand pointer finger with right hand)
This little piggy had roast beef, (hold left hand middle finger with right hand)
This little piggy had none. (hold left hand ring finger with right hand)
And this little piggy went “wee, wee, wee” all the way home! (hold left hand pinkie finger with right hand and then tickle a friend)
“‘This Little Piggy’ is a nursery rhyme. Let’s all say ‘nursery rhyme’ together. One, two three, nursery rhyme! A nursery rhyme is an old song or poem for children.” Ask a volunteer to name another nursery rhyme. Everyone says/sings the suggested nursery rhyme together. You perform the well known actions (or made up actions if you don’t know them) and the children copy you. Repeat using suggestions from two more volunteers.
* Running time approx. 2 mins 30 secs.
5. Action song or poem: ‘Incy Wincy Spider’ (traditional)
a) “My favourite nursery rhyme is ‘Incy Wincy Spider’. Let’s turn our hands into
spiders.” Sing the song acapella with the well known actions.
b) "Now it's time for us to become Incy Wincy using our whole bodies.” Wave magic
wands and say, “One, two, three abracadabra.” Everyone stands up. During the first line, mime climbing up the water spout. As you sing “washed the spider out”, jump to the floor and lie down. During the third line, wake up with a stretch. During the final line, climb back up the water spout.
c) “We’re starting to feel tired after all that climbing!” Repeat actions from activity b at a much slower tempo.
