Music player, music speaker, sparkly magic bag, coloured scarves, egg shakers and magic sparkles
Lesson Plan
1. Warm-up: ‘Shake Your Sillies Out’ performed by The Wiggles See term four lesson one. Make sure to use lots of energy!

2. Stretching and curling: Moody Cat See term four lesson one.

3. Travel to Danceland: ‘Sleeping Beauty Waltz’ written by Tchaikovsky & performed by Czecho-Slovak State Philharmonic Orchestra
“It’s time to travel to Danceland like butterflies again but this time if the music stops, it means a bird is coming so we have to freeze so they can’t see us.” Hand a coloured scarf to each of the children, and they fly like butterflies to Danceland. When the music stops, encourage the children to freeze on one foot. When you are ready to finish, gradually turn down the music and congratulate the children on arriving at Danceland. NB: This activity is similar to Musical Statues.
4. Introduce the theme: ‘Let’s Make a Circle’ written by Anne Porter Without speaking, get the children into a circle by singing ‘Let’s Make a Circle’ as in term four lesson one.
Quietly walk one pointer finger up your arm. “Can you guess what I’m making with my finger?” The children join you in making a caterpillar with their finger. Switch hands. “Does anyone know what a caterpillar becomes when it is older?” Everyone makes a butterfly with their hands. Ask a few volunteers to show you their unique way of making a butterfly on their own and then the group copies.

5. Fine motor skills: ‘I’m a Hungry Caterpillar’ written by Unknown
Perform the rhyme using the actions described below. The children will enjoy clapping their hands as they say ‘pop’ so practise this several times.
I'm a hungry caterpillar walking slowly (slowly wriggle right pointer finger up left arm) Looking for something (place hand above eyes searching for something)
To fill my tummy (rub tummy)
When I go to sleep (close eyes, tilt head and rest on folded hands)
I build a little cocoon (cup hands together)
Pop! I'll be a butterfly soon. (clap hands together on ‘pop’ then link thumbs and make flapping movement)
Repeat the rhyme again walking left pointer finger up right arm for the first line. Repeat again walking right and left pointer fingers up opposing arms simultaneously (so you have two caterpillars) for the first line. Encourage the children to help you say the words on the final repeat.
