Lesson Plan
1. Warm-up: ‘Shake Your Sillies Out’ performed by The Wiggles
Click activity name to open YouTube video link.
Play the track and perform actions as in the video. Make sure to use lots of energy! * Running time approx. 2 mins.
2. Stretching and curling: Elephants Spraying Water
“It’s time for us to be elephants. First we’ve got to suck up some water with our trunks.” From a standing position, bend at the waist to drop arms and head towards the floor. Make a sucking noise (as though you are sucking up the water) and then roll your body up through the spine slowly. Encourage the children to keep looking at their belly buttons so that their head is the last thing up. Rise onto tippy toes as you stretch your arms (trunk) up to the sky. “And spray all your friends with water!” Make a loud elephant noise as you pretend to spray water all over the children. Perform the activity three times.
* Running time approx. 3 mins.
3. Travel to Danceland: ‘Pegleg Pete’ performed by Brandon Fiechter Tell the children that today they are going to travel to Danceland like one-legged pirates. You demonstrate hopping on your own. Then ask a volunteer to hold your hands as they attempt to “jump using just one leg”. Help a few more children to practise and encourage any other adults in the room to do the same. Tell the children that if they find it too tricky, they can “jump on two legs instead of one”. Play the music and encourage the children to follow you and hop around the room in roughly the same direction. When the music ends (or when you feel it’s time to finish), congratulate the children on making it to Danceland.
* Running time approx. 4 mins.
4. Introduce the theme: ‘Let’s Make a Circle’ written by Anne Porter Without speaking, get the children into a circle by singing acapella:
Let’s make a circle, A circle, a circle. Let’s make a circle, Here today.
Repeat until everyone is in a circle. Please use this song every time you need the children in a circle throughout the lesson.
Ask the children if they know which season they are in. Ask volunteers to tell you what happens in the winter (e.g. it gets colder, we wear warmer clothes, it may snow in some places, some animals hibernate, days are shorter and nights are longer etc.). “My favourite thing about winter is when it snows.” Reveal snowflake laminate and
