A new development of detached homes just six kilometres from the Melbourne
CBD is set to be among the first collections of carbon-neutral individual
houses so close to the city.
On the banks of the Merri Creek in Northcote, the 15 homes are all designed
and orientated to maximise light, warmth and air, and will include solar
panels, rainwater harvesting systems, cross ventilation, insulation, shading
and electric car chargers.
“We fell in love with the natural beauty of this site, with the creek frontage
and surrounded by greenery,” said Adelene Teh, the executive director of
developers Beulah. “So, it inspired us to reduce our carbon footprint at the
same time to help preserve this environment.
“We wanted to both respect nature and enhance the health and well-being
of everyone who will live here, and integrate the buildings in harmony with the
landscape.”
The Wilds development with 13 free-standing homes and two that are side-by-
side, as a result, will start construction early next year with completion slated
for the end of 2022. And although marketing has yet to begin for off-the-plan
sales, already five have been sold to passers-by who saw the signage.
“I think it certainly shows how people are becoming more and more
conscious of the need for sustainability, and have an appetite for responsible
developments,” said Beulah’s head of residential sales James Cirelli.
