               There are permitted exceptions to the above requirements. Should it be proposed not to

               comply with the above requirements the situation should be assessed on a case-by-case
               basis with reference made to ADB Section 9.

                   1.4.21  Fire Stopping


               All openings for pipes, ducts, conduits or cables which pass through any fire separating

               element should be:

                   •   Kept as few in number as possible,


                   •   Kept as small as practicable, and

                   •   Appropriately fire stopped.

               Pipes which pass through fire resisting construction should meet the guidance of Table 14 of

               ADB. In summary, this table permits the passage of pipes of a dimeter of 40mm through a
               compartment wall. If the pipe is non-combustible, the maximum diameter can be increased
               to 160mm. Alternatively, any pipe of any diameter can pass through a compartment line if it

               has a proprietary sealing system which has fire test data to prove that it can maintain the fire
               resistance of the wall floor or cavity.


               Pipes of aluminium alloy, fibre cement or UPVC with a maximum internal diameter of 160mm
               may be sleeved with a non-combustible material for a distance of not less than 1,000mm
               either side of the fire resisting element.

                   1.4.22  Fire and smoke dampers


               Fire dampers are to be provided within any ductwork at the point which it penetrates a fire

               separating element. All fire dampers and their frames should be tested to BS EN 1366-2 and
               be classified to BS EN 13501-3. They should have an E classification equal to or greater
               than the wall/floor through which they pass.


               Fire dampers activated only by fusible links are not suitable for protecting escape routes. In
               such instances an ES classified fire and smoke damper which is activated by a fire and

               smoke detector shall be used. All other dampers should be fire rated E60.

               In this instance ES 60 classified fire and smoke dampers activated by smoke detection are
               required in all ductwork passing through a protected lobby and/or protected stair. It is

               however noted services are not permitted to run through or be accessed from the fire fighting
               stair.
