1.4.4 Travel Distances
Approved Document B specifies the following maximum travel distances for a building of
Shop and Commercial use:
Maximum travel distance where escape is possible in:
More than one direction
One direction only (m)
(m)
Shop and Commercial 18m 45m
Office 18 45
Storage (Normal Hazard) 25 45
Storage (Higher Hazard) 12 25
Place of Special Fire 9 18
Hazard
Plant Room 9 35
Travel distance should be measured from the most remote part of the floorplate to a place of
relative safety, which may be a final exit, a protected stair enclosure or a compartment
boundary. Travel distances should take account of actual escape routes and therefore
cannot be measured over fixtures or furniture. Where the internal layout of fittings, partitions
etc. is not known, direct distances may be taken as 2/3rds the prescribed limit specified in
the table above.
1.4.5 Stair Width
Stairs designated for escape should be suitably sized for the number of occupants expected
to use them. This width can be determined by estimating the population of the area the stair
serves and the information contained in the table below.
Maximum number of persons served by a stair of width:
1,000mm 1,100mm 1,200mm 1,300mm 1,400mm 1,500mm 1,600mm 1,700mm 1,800mm
No. of
occupants 150 220 240 260 280 300 320 340 360
served
It is noted that handrails and strings which do not protrude more than 100mm into the width
of stairs may be disregarded when measuring clear stair width.
1.4.6 Exit Signage
All escape routes should be distinctively and conspicuously marked by an exit sign in
accordance with BS ISO 3864-1 and BS5499-4.
