               The vowels consist of 7 “short” sound, 5 “long” sound” and 8” Diphtongs”


               Short sound :         ɪ in big [bɪg],    ʊ in low [loʊ]  ʌ in hug [hʌg]

               Long Sound :    i:  in weak [wi:k],  ɑ: in long [lɑ:ŋ]

               Diphthongs   : eɪ in great [greɪt], aɪ in bike [baɪk]

                   a.  Short and long vowel pairs
               Pronunciation problems also occur for non-English speaking people. This is because

               their language does not have a distinction between short and long vowel. The vowel

               sound of these two words may also become the problem in pronunciation
               “ ship” – “sheep’’

               “bit” – “beat”

               “not” =  “nought”
               “batter” – “barter”

               “pool” – “pull”
