A metaphorical message about complex reality
Shin Hang-Sub (Art Critic)
Every artist aims to complete his or her own formative world, that is, an individual form. However, in terms of results,
very few authors achieve this goal. As such, it is difficult to complete individual forms through an independent formative
language and formative language method. It's a bit too long to devise a formative world that no one has ever been to
or that has never existed before. Nevertheless, painters constantly explore and find ideas to achieve this goal. This is
because the eternity of the work cannot be guaranteed unless the individual formal beauty is completed. This is the
reason why he concentrates all his competencies on finding new materials with a creative and passionate attitude and
creating a new formative language.
Roh Jae-soon has been working with the subject of lips for the past 10 years. Primary color lips fill the screen, and the
background surrounding him is filled with heavy and dark images of achromatic colors. This contrasting color image
makes it stand out in any place. Above all, lips adorned with primary color lipsticks dominate the screen, drawing
attention. Before reading the overall image or meaning of the picture, one is visually overwhelmed.
Perhaps it was foreseen that he chose lips, a part of the body, as a material. After graduating from college, I once fell
in love with modern aesthetics and worked on snow as a subject. It is based on the fact that not only the strong visual
impression of the eyes, but also the inner world can be revealed as it is known as the 'window of the mind'. It is not
known whether the electric power of interest in a specific part of the human body was the motive.
His works with lips are relatively simple yet have a clear formal beauty. While the image of the lips dominates the screen,
it is a relatively simple task to set a non-figurative and abstract image as the background. These patterns are formalized
and repeated in each work. However, if you look closely, you can see that it is a surprisingly complex configuration.
Compared to the lips, which have a large presence that overwhelms the screen, the outer edge, that is, the background
surrounding the lips, is filled with very complex and confusing images, making it quite dizzying. It is filled with torn and
torn pieces of paper, graffiti, and weather-stained images that tell of the accumulation of a long period of time, as if the
poster was torn. The composition that contrasts lips with lipsticks of various colors against the image of an old wall that
exposes the accumulation of old time is creative and unique.
