IBDC the Global bicycle design competitionI B D C NE W SSpeaking of Taiwanese bicycle, we could almost describe it as the pride of the Taiwanese, over many years we have an important role to play in the global stage. The infrastructure was well developed in all stages of manufacture, the manufacture technology rank the best in the world.In 1996, the Department Of Industrial Technology, Ministry Of Economic Affairs, R.O.C sensed the needs for Taiwanese bicycle industry to continue its development for high quality, innovative and multi functional products, in order to dominate the innovative global trend and consolidating the position of leading bicycle design. Hence the competition was held as an annual event.The IBDC (International Bicycle Design Competition) can be regarded as the birthplace of many innovative designs in global context. Each year, over fifty countries with over hundred exhibits initiated the innovative trend worldwide, not only in terms of forms, but also in terms of ideology, ideas on structural and functional aspect. It allows us to understand the different life style and development trend worldwide. IBDC is currently the only professional competition of its type worldwide; it is also the first design competition recognized consecutively by the ICSID in Taiwan with reputation spread through out the world. During the ten years, we received 7252 designers entering the competition from 83 countries. The competition has been recognized with its size and creditability by the international community. The competition is also a valuable resource to the bicycle industry with over 200 selected innovative designs together with over 7000 professionals.IBDC has been held for ten consecutive years; over the years, we have invited professionals in the world's bicycle industry and industrial design communities to be members of the judge committee. Countries included US, Germany, Holland, France, Japan, Korea, Italy, UK, Slovakia, Austria and Taiwan. With the international committee visiting Taiwan, professional seminars were also been held for the industry. All these helps to bring many new ideas for the relevant manufacturers, school and cycle enthusiast; it also contributed to the vibrant development of national industrial design and bicycle industry by encouraging designers to develop a global vision. Moreover, from the annual competition, it is common to find that our manufacturers had embraced the current global trends with many new forms, new materials and new functions in their design ideas.We are happy to see, IBDC helps to bring about new creative thinking, what can we predict in ththe 10 IBDC from the design entries?
