A new chapter
for independent
prescribers in
Wales
In an exciting evolution of the Pharmacy
Independent Prescriber Service (PIPS), a
supplementary service specification is paving the
way for community pharmacies in Wales to play
an even greater role in providing sexual health
support. This update includes the integration of
long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs),
further cementing pharmacies as accessible,
patient-centred hubs for healthcare.
As part of NHS Wales, this initiative expands the
scope of the PIPS to include the administration
and supply of injectable LARCs. This service is
designed to meet the needs of patients seeking
accessible, non-judgmental, and confidential
sexual health services. The emphasis is on
seamless integration with existing healthcare
pathways, ensuring that pharmacists work
collaboratively with GP practices, local health
boards, and sexual health specialists to deliver
high-quality care.
