Is Pharmacy First
reaching its potential?
Nina Marsh
Senior Research Analyst
Healthwatch England
Over a year after Pharmacy First launched, new research from
Healthwatch England shows people are happy with the service
provided, but also reveals the challenges limiting its potential.
A national poll of over 7,000 adults across England found that
nearly nine in ten patients (86%) reported positive experiences
when seeking help from pharmacists for the seven conditions
covered by the scheme. Patients particularly valued its speed and
convenience, especially compared to GP appointments, which are
often difficult to book.
Strong case for expanding Pharmacy First
There is a strong public appetite for expanding the use of pharmacies
to access care for more conditions. Around two thirds support the idea
of receiving pharmacy treatment for eye infections (67%), skin problems
(66%), and the management of chronic conditions like high blood
pressure and asthma (65%).
