Regarding communication; the IT is to be in place to allow the
Pharmacist to report directly into your clinical system any
consultation and interventions they make regarding you patients.
They will also know how to refer to you any patients of concern.
So, Pharmacy First should really be music to our ears in general
practice. The scheme allows community pharmacy to be a first
port a call for consultations and treatments and will improve
patient access to timely treatment without the need to see a GP.
In turn this will relieve pressure on GP practices allowing more
patients to be seen, that need to see a GP.
If we understand and embrace what
Pharmacy First has to offer, I think
we stand to make better use of a
pharmacists’ clinical skills and ensure
pharmacy becomes a more integral
part of primary care.
I would hope that GPs and pharmacists
will work together to make the most of this
investment and seize the opportunity to
make this change a successful one. It has
been well thought through with both the
patients and the GP practice in mind, helping
increase access and decrease workload.
