For our members, what do you think are the most beneficial aspects of
the Numark membership?
“I think for me, members benefit from being part of the only organisation
for independent pharmacy that has a complete end to end ability to deliver.
We have the community pharmacy network located at the heart of where
people live, and we also have tremendous support behind it in the Numark
team and brand. I know, even at this early stage, that the Numark team
take great pride in what they deliver and constantly strive for excellence.
Through the membership, the pharmacy teams get access to information and
advice which maybe not everyone realises what is readily available to them
– something for me to work on. Right beside that, we have PHOENIX as a
wholesaler who make sure the medicines and products arrive to our members,
helping us all contribute to keeping people well at home.
No other organisation or body, that I can see, who would
talk for or represent the pharmacy owners, has the ability to
back it up. Numark can do that for its members and that is
an absolutely unique position for the partnership between
Numark, its members and PHOENIX as a wholesaler.
Part of my role, as Chairman, is to make sure that the focus of that end
to end process remains on the delivery of the services and the support to
the pharmacies at the frontline. I don't think there is another membership
organisation in this industry that can do that like we can.”
How do you see the future of Numark developing for its members?
“We are going to have a five to ten year period where there will be a mixed
economy in the community pharmacy network as the number of Independent
Prescribers grow. Some pharmacies will have a prescriber present now, and as
the newly qualified pharmacists become prescriber qualified at the end of their
foundation training year, that will mean that the pharmacy network will move at
a different pace every year, as more and more qualified prescribers come into the
network.
That undoubtedly, is going to need management of how that's communicated
to the general public, as well as making sure that older pharmacists, like myself,
don't feel as though they're being abandoned on that journey. We need to ensure
that they are aware that they still have a very valuable role to play and how do
we support that over time. If Numark can take a leading role in that debate and
support colleagues like me, I think that's another tremendous benefit.
I know there's a real opportunity for the membership to grow. I think there's
an opportunity to consider how we make our information and support to the
pharmacy network more aligned and attuned to each individual country and
making sure that we have an offer tailored to need. I’m not saying that it's going
to be easy, but I think it should be an aspiration for the Numark brand. In doing
so, we can demonstrate that we fully understand what's going on in each of the
countries and make sure that we provide the maximum support to our members.
That in turn will mean that they can operate the most efficient pharmacies
and allow them to move into a model of community pharmacy practice that is
definitely going to look and feel different over the next five to ten years”.
