Harry McQuillan, recently appointed Chairman of
Numark, is a qualified pharmacist who began his
career in the late 1980s as a pharmacist with Boots.
He worked there for 15 years, before transitioning to
the role of National Pharmacy Adviser to NHS 24 and
has subsequently spent the last 17 years as the Chief
Executive Officer of Community Pharmacy Scotland.
As well as taking on his role of Chairman of Numark,
Harry still remains a visiting Professor of Pharmacy
Practice at Strathclyde University; therefore, he
brings with him a wealth of industry knowledge and
will be a true asset to the Numark membership.
What is your vision for the Numark membership going forward
and what do you want to bring to the membership as Chairman?
“For the membership, the recent announcement that my role as
Numark Chairman will have UK Board status, is a very positive
message for the pharmacy owners to hear. That puts our community
pharmacy partners at the heart of service delivery across the group.
That is a clear statement of intent and something the organisation
hasn't had for a while now. I'll be making sure that the member’s voice
is heard at the highest level.
In terms of the future of pharmacy, part of my role is to look ahead
and express what that could look like. That subsequently leads to
considering what Numark as a membership organisation can do to
support that vision and prepare for its implementation. Undoubtedly,
how the future of community pharmacy practice fits with prescribing,
how that then fits with maintaining supply, and how can we separate
in our minds, the accuracy of supply and focus more on the safety of
supply will be something we will have to consider. I want Numark to
lead the thinking on this and help express what that model could be
and with my experience, I'll be working to deliver that.
To facilitate this, I will need to understand the different NHS
landscapes in all four of the UK countries. That will mean talking to
and liaising with the Chief Pharmaceutical Officers and their civil
servant colleagues, the negotiating bodies and through this trying
to get a coherent and sustainable service that the community
pharmacy network will engage with and provide to the citizens in the
respective countries. Those are some of the things I will focus on and
bring to this role.”
