Pharmacy First Advanced Service
Launch of the New National Advanced Service.
Details of a widely anticipated new National Pharmacy First Advanced
Service were published on November 16 2024. With funding of the service
th
being part of the agreement for £645 million investment pledged within the
‘Delivery Plan for recovering access to primary care’ published May 2023,

A poll commissioned by CPE in March 2023 found that 68% of people would rather seek
health advice for common conditions at a community pharmacy rather than a GP surgery.
With demand for walk-in healthcare advice and treatment rising in community pharmacy
as patients are unable to access same-day GP appointments, this new service not only
supports the funding challenges that the sector currently faces, but also improves access
to healthcare for patients where it is limited in other primary care settings.
This new service launches on 31 January and enables the management of the following
st
seven common conditions:
Infected
Sinusitis Shingles insect bites Impetigo
Sore Throat Acute Otitis Uncomplicated
Media Urinary Tract Infection
(UTI) in women
Patients can access the service either by referral (as per CPCS) or
where they have been identified as suitable for the service.
Following a consultation, the pharmacists will provide advice on
selfcare, safety-netting and where clinically appropriate can supply
certain OTC and prescription-only medicines including antibiotics.
