Wrong group movements
Wrong group movements are a term used to describe the incorrect
categorisation of individuals for prescription charges. They result from human
error and poor prescription management. They don’t include prescription
charge fraud as this is not in your control.
In an ideal world, a dispensary should have no Wrong Group Movements. But,
there are lots, and this is an avoidable loss. The financial implications of wrong
group movements are significant in some dispensaries but sometimes they
are not even noticed, mainly because no one is looking for them. Do you know
where to check for them? If you don’t then I suggest you ask the Practice
manager for the report. It is found on the PCSE portal along with other
information relating to your drug payments.
The report will look something like this:
In the practice above the loss resulting from poor administration of prescriptions will
have resulted in a financial loss of around £220 (calculated 23 x £9.65) in May.
Ouch, that hurts! At that rate, it will be nudging towards £3K in the year.
So, what is going wrong here? Well in the practice above there are 22 patients for
whom the exemption declaration hasn’t been signed and thus the prescription has
been reclassified as paid and the £9.65 per item has been deducted as a charge paid.
In the one other prescription there has been a paid (?) prescription submitted as
exempt. I wonder which it really was?
All these mistakes are a result of nothing more than sloppy work by dispensers not
checking the reverse of prescriptions are filled correctly. A completely avoidable loss.
