So, what are we going
to do about this?
Well first you need to have wrong group movements on
your radar. I would suggest you look back over the past six
months or so and see what your reports and losses look like.
You should see zero prescriptions switched but I doubt that in most
cases that will be what you find. Sadly, I met a practice just this week that had tallied
up a total of £30,000 in losses from wrong group movements in the past 12 months. I
nearly wept for them.
Solutions and measures
Addressing the financial impact of wrong group movements MUST be addressed
TODAY. If you have staff who don’t understand the implications of filling in the reverse
of the prescription incorrectly then I suggest you train them without delay. Share the
Wrong Group Movement reports and do the sums. Does everybody understand?
I would also have some audit measures in place. If the issue persists, then get
dispensers to initial the prescriptions they hand out (or send out for delivery) for a
month or so. You will soon find out who the culprits are if you check the scripts before
sending them off and pull out the errors.
Finally – I would recommend an SOP then there is no doubt in anybody’s mind that
this is a non-negotiable task to be addressed during the handing out of prescriptions.
The issue of wrong group movements has a tangible financial impact on you as a
dispensing contractor, but this negative impact is completely avoidable. Addressing
this problem is essential to reducing losses at a time when we are working so hard
to maintain profit margins in the dispensary. By implementing improved training,
communication, and auditing procedures, you can eradicate this type of loss with
immediate effect. Please, please go and check now what your report looks like and
stop this loss.
