Detention is the rule not the exception in
Mexico.
It is extremely difficult to pursue asylum from a
detention center.
Prolonged detention is a major reason asylum-
seekers abandon their application, as they
cannot bear to await the outcome while being
deprived of liberty.
Detention traumatizes all migrants and asylum-
seekers, but presents additional challenges for
children and families.
Many children from the Northern Triangle pass
through detention without applying for asylum
resulting in their deportation back to danger.
