was one of the most profitable such terminals in the country but in 1978 Bill was posted to the
much less financially viable Birmingham Freightliner Depot at Landor Street, Bordesley Green,
presumably to improve its fortunes. He appears to have succeeded because the Dudley depot
closed just 8 years later and all its container traffic transferred to Birmingham. During his period
as a Dudley Rotarian Bill’s home was in Telford.

473 Rev. Canon Archibald Thomas (‘Teddy’) BARTLETT (1915-1991)
(Inducted Dec.1975; left in June 1978 on moving away.) Clerk in Holy
Orders. Vicar of the parish church of St Edmund King & Martyr ('Bottom
Church'), Dudley from 1960 and a Canon of Worcester cathedral from
the mid 1960s. He was appointed a Diocesan officer and Vicar of
Wichenford near Worcester in 1978. He was born at Newton Abbot,
South Devon. He trained for the ministry at Kelham Theological College,
Nottinghamshire, a spartan institution of the monastic order of the
Society of the Sacred Mission. He was ordained at Carlisle Cathedral in
1938 and made curate of St Luke’s, Barrow-in-Furness. From December 1942 until the end of
the War he was a Chaplain with the RAF, with the relative rank of Squadron Leader. In 1951 he
moved to the Vale of Evesham to become Vicar at the church of St Mary & St Milburgh,
Offenham. This was the start of his long association with the Diocese of Worcester. He was
described as an ‘energetic high churchman with years of experience in the Church Assembly [of
the Church of England] and a reputation in the diocese for sound, conservative views.’ He
anticipated being elected to the newly constituted General Synod in 1970 but the Vicar of
Evesham, who was entrusted with his nomination form, forgot to post it! He was Vicar of
                  Offenham until coming to Dudley.

474 Michael (‘Mike’) Raymond PAGE (1947- ) (Inducted Nov.1975; left in 1978/79.) Sports Goods
Retailing. He joined his father in the business C F Page & Sons as manager of the firm’s
sportswear and sporting goods shop in New Street, Dudley. The shop opened in 1972 to
complement the established business in Cradley Heath High Street and both traded until the
late 1980s. Michael changed direction and was a director of architectural and civil engineering
consultants Frameform Limited, Frameform Design Services and Frameform Engineering
Services, which practised in Chapel Ash, Wolverhampton between 1991 and 1998. He lived at
Wightwick, Wolverhampton until 2007 and then in Codsall. He is a keen golfer and was a
director of Enville Golf Club from 1994 to 1998.

475 David BAILEY ( - ) (Inducted Oct.1976; left in 1980/81.) Probation service. He was Senior
Probation Officer with the West Midlands Probation Service based at The Inhedge, Dudley but
in 1980 was posted to the Wolverhampton office and found it impossible to maintain attendance
at the club. His home was in Wolverhampton from at least 1972.

476 Giovanni (‘Johnny’) AMATO (1928-1985) (Inducted Feb.1977; left 24.9.1979.) Hotels, licensed.
General Manager of The Station Hotel, Dudley (where the Rotary Club met at the time). He was
born in Italy. In his early 20s he appears to have been a cabin boy on passenger ships crossing
between Genoa and New York. It is not known when he came to England but in April 1967 he
became a naturalised British citizen, at which time he was living in Birmingham and was
described as a Head Waiter. He moved to Dudley from Birmingham in about 1978 but soon
afterwards left the Station Hotel and moved to Tamworth. In 2009 his widow Audrey, then 84
years old and blind, drove three laps around a racetrack to raise money for charity.

            477 Ernest W BREAKWELL (1937- ) (Inducted Feb.1977; resigned 24.10.1977 on moving
employment.) Friendly Society. Manager of the Ideal Benefit Building Society office in Priory
