He developed a lifelong love of cricket; was keen on music and a member of several choirs; and
had an Interest in railways, both heritage steam railways and model railways. (He had a big
model railway layout at home.) He was Chairman of the Rotary Club of Dudley Housing
Association 1986-1997.
493 Andrew Gordon MILLWARD (1943- ) (Inducted 14.7.1980; left in 1986/87.) Communication
Services, Postal. Head Postmaster of Dudley from 1979 until 1986 when
he was promoted to District Manager. He left the Club soon after. He
retired from the Post Office in about 1995 and set up as a business
consultant. He has held many influential posts, including: Director of
Dudley Training and Enterprise Council (1992-95), Dudley & Sandwell
Chamber of Commerce & Industry (1995-2003), Birmingham Chamber of
Commerce and Industry (1992-1994), West Midlands Development
Agency (1994-96) and the Black Country Chamber of Commerce & Industry
(2001-2002); Chairman of the South Staffordshire Healthcare NHS Trust
(2001-2006), Chair of the North Staffordshire Primary Care Trust (2007-08) and a Director of the
Douglas MacMillan Hospice, Stoke on Trent (2013-18). He has a great interest in the
development of railways so in recent years has been a member of the West Midlands Regional
Rail Forum and a national Board member of Railfuture, The Railway Development Society and
Railwatch, linked bodies that campaign for more investment and greater use of Britain's
railways. He was born and grew up in the Potteries, then was in Stafford for 10 years before
coming to work in Dudley, although his home was in Kinver. He returned to North Staffordshire
in 2007 when he moved from Kinver to the hamlet of Baldwins Gate between Stoke and Market
Drayton.
494 Royden (‘Roy’) Matthew SMITH (1930-2021) (Inducted 14.7.1980; left in 1983/84.) Architect.
Partner in the practice Harper & Sperring, chartered architects, which at the time was in Firs
Street, Dudley. He retired in the early 1990s. Roy was born and raised in Dudley but lived at
Pedmore Lane, Hagley from 1963. At Dudley Grammar School he took great pride in holding the
record for the most detentions in a week, but was also a good athlete, achieving great success
in distance running, swimming and rugby. From school he became articled to AT & B Butler
where he qualified as an Architect. After some years gaining knowledge and experience with
several practices, he became a partner with Harper & Sperring, specialising in pubs, churches
and later hospitals. His many interests included gardening, fishing, stamp collecting and wildlife.
He was a member of Dudley Round Table and its President in 1979. However his main interest
was Freemasonry, from the time he joined Priory Lodge in 1970. He was a prominent member
of numerous lodges in Worcestershire Province, including Old Dudleians, and attained high rank
in numerous Orders.
495 Terence (‘Terry’) Roy BOWATER (1944-1997) (Inducted 20.10.1980; left in 1981/82.) Law,
General practice. Partner in Dudley solicitors, John R Caswell & Co. of St James’s Road and later
Himley Road. In about 1993 he fell out with John Caswell and set up Bowater & Co in St James’s
Road, Dudley. He was born in Oldbury and studied Law at Birmingham University. His home
was in Kingswinford except for a short period in Oldswinford. He died unexpectedly of a heart
attack at Birmingham airport having just returned from holiday.
