Born in Russia, he was a journalist of wide experience including being news
editor of the Jamaica Daily Gleaner, editor of the Straits Daily Echo in
Penang, Times correspondent in North Malaya, assistant literary editor of
the Daily Mail, diplomatic correspondent of Allied Newspapers, and special
correspondent in Russia for the London Star. After the war he turned to
lecturing and writing books based on his travels and career. He was
presumably made an honorary member because, in 1950, he was a guest
speaker at a Dudley Rotary Club meeting and separately at a District rally
of Inner Wheel members hosted by the Dudley club.
19. Viscount Cobham (1909–1977)
Honorary member 1950-1976
Charles John Lyttelton, 10th Viscount Cobham. He was Governor-General
of New Zealand 1957-1962. He enjoyed a career in first-class cricket, playing
more than 90 times for Worcestershire in the 1930s and captaining the club
between 1936 and 1939. He was also a keen golfer, competent rugby
referee, good with a gun and enthusiastic fly fisherman.
