HUMAN PAPILLOMA VIRUS VACCINE

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a DNA virus of the family Papillomaviridae. More than 200 subtypes of HPV
have been discovered, of which 15–20 are oncogenic. Transmission is primarily by sexual contact. HPV infec-
tions are transient and benign usually, but persistent genital infection can lead to precancers and cancers. Cur-
rent estimates indicate that every year around 1.25 lakh women are diagnosed with cervical cancer in India and
over 60%of them die from the disease. More than 90% of all cervical cancer are linked to HPV.
HPV infection causes
Cervical cancer ,Vulvar cancer, vaginal cancer ,Anal cancer,Penile cancer -HPV 16, 18
Genital warts,Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis - HPV 6, 11
CIN & cervical AIS - HPV 6, 11, 16, 18
Oropharyngeal cancers,Head & neck cancer
Human papilloma virus vaccine
HPV vaccines are recommended for girls and boys. HPV Vaccines have excellent safety, efficacy, and effective-
ness. Since protection is seen only when the vaccine is given before infection with HPV, the vaccine should
preferably be given prior to sexual debut.
Minimum age of vaccination : 9 years.
Vaccines available in India
Cervavac ( serum institute of India) 4vHPV
Gardasil 4 ( 4 vHPV), Gardasil 9 ( 9vHPV)
Vaccine schedule
9vHPV Vaccine - Nine Valent HPV Vaccine (serotypes 6,11,16,18,31,33,45,52,58)
9-14 years ( females & males ) -2 doses– 0,6months
15 years -26 years ( females)- 3doses 0,2,6 months
9vHPV (Gardasil 9)is approved for boys between 9-14 years,for females between 9-26 years of age
4 vHPV Vaccine - Quadrivalent vaccine (4vHPV) (serotypes 6, 11, 16, and 18).
9 - 14 years ( females & males) 2 doses - 0,6 months
15-26 years- Cervavac ( females & males) 3 doses -0,2, 6 months
15–45 years - Gardasil 4( females) 3-doses 0, 2, and 6 months
Immunocompromised persons of all ages -3 dose schedule 0,2,6 months
Storage: at 2–8°C and must not be frozen.
Dose: 0.5 mL intramuscular in deltoid.
Contraindication - hypersensitivity to any vaccine component Hypersensitivity for a previous dose
Vaccine should be avoided in pregnancy.
Adverse Events
Usually mild Injection site pain, swelling, and redness, headache, fever
Coadministration with other adolescent vaccines was also found to be safe and immunogenic
HPV vaccine is not a replacement for periodic screening of cervical cancer . Hence screening programs should
continue as per recommendations
