Lent discipline 33
The Internet is a powerful (if occasionally frustrating) source of information. If you
don’t have your own modem connection you can access the Internet at most public
libraries for free. You could decide to spend, say, an hour each week doing research
on the Internet as one of your three items.
You may find it helpful to keep a diary of the actions you decided to take, and
the problems and benefits that you experienced.
Throughout the Lent discipline there are prayers and other worship resources to
help you focus. Also included are some stories from the Intermediate Technology
Development Group (ITDG). ITDG was conceived by E.F. Schumacher and helps
people to use technology in the fight against poverty. ITDG works in partnership
with communities to develop practical answers to their problems, based on local
knowledge and skills and putting people’s needs first. 1
The ITDG stories in the Lent discipline are about alternative options to the high
technology we take for granted.
A prayer to begin with:
From quark to planet
Creator God,
from quark to planet your universe is awesome.
Give us eyes to gape at the wonders daily about us,
and the will to live in the harmony of your creating.
Help us to recognise and honour the connections of all things,
even at cost to our own wants and comforts;
so we may live gently on earth,
and all creation praise you. Amen
