woman of substance is a woman of power, a woman of positive
influence and a woman of meaning. She is one who matters. She
is one who makes a difference. To be branded a woman of substance
is one of the greatest compliments one can give a woman.
The IWCPI District 380, through Wheel of Service, will recognize and
honour our members who are high energy achievers and know how to
leverage the pluses they were born with. And the better IWCPI is for
having them as members.

An Accomplished Woman
In the novel Pride and Prejudice, written in 1813, woman “must possess a certain something in
the author Jane Austen wrote that no woman her air and manner of walking, the tone of
“…can be really esteemed accomplished who her voice, her address and expressions, or
does not greatly surpass what is usually met the word [accomplished woman] will be but
with.” She made references to six characteristics half-deserved.” While written in the Regency
a woman must possess to earn the label era, all these still ring true and very relevant
‘‘accomplished woman’’: physical appearance, in the modern age. Bridget Jones’ Diary,
education and knowledge, marriage and having written by Helen Fielding in 1996, depicted
children, career and skills, status and class, how women ought to be, in parallel to
manners and behaviors. A woman, she wrote, Austen’s accomplished woman in Pride and
must have a thorough understanding of music, Prejudice. For some of us, the compliment
dancing, singing, among others. Additionally, a would seem to be an unreachable goal.
