A Tribute to Anandi (Sandra) May:
A Reverent Voice in the Yoga Community
Anandi (Sandra) May, a dedicated Yoga teacher from Alexandria, Virginia, was a certified instructor in both Integral Yoga and Sampoorna Yoga under Yogi Hari. Since 1992, she had guided numerous students on their yogic journey with a deep sense of devotion and spiritual insight. But what made Anandi’s path especially radiant was the way she received and revered the teachings of Adhiyogi.
Anandi first met Adhiyogi at a satsang at Yogaville, a sacred meeting that would leave a lasting impression on her spiritual evolution. Already a seasoned teacher herself, she found herself deeply moved—totally impressed, in her own words—by the unique and authentic method that Adhiyogi brought forth. His teaching wasn't just about postures; it was a complete, integrated path encompassing body, mind, and spirit.
Moved by his method, Anandi invited Adhiyogi to teach at her home studio. She not only participated in his classes but also observed her own students becoming visibly inspired by his presence and style. He would begin class by delving into the philosophy of Yoga—it’s "why", not just it’s "how"—touching on the transformative power it holds for the entire human system.
The Hatha Yoga portion of his sessions, while different from Anandi's own practice, left her feeling energized and uplifted. His deep relaxation sessions, accompanied by his own chanting of OM Shantiḥ, provided a spiritual resonance that lingered in the hearts of those present. His mastery of Sanskrit and the Vedas, she noted, was especially inspiring.
Anandi recognized in Adhiyogi something rare and vital—a teacher whose dedication to the holistic depth of Yoga was not just intellectual or technical, but profoundly spiritual. She believed the Yoga community stood to gain immensely from his presence and teachings. Her words became not just a testament to a teacher, but a beacon of mutual reverence between two devoted paths.
Though Anandi is no longer with us in form, her spirit lives on—in the lives of her students, in the vibration of her voice, and in her gracious acknowledgement of those who walked alongside her on the path of Yoga. Her story remains a gentle, powerful reminder of how true teachers recognize and uplift one another, forming the unbroken lineage of authentic seekers and guides.
OM Shantiḥ, dear Anandi.
