and fully, leads to the purification of citta and thereafter realization of the distinction between puruṣa and prakr̥ ti. This realization is called vivekakhyāti (Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtra 2.26).
vivekakhyāti is a very important semi-final milestone in the eight-fold path of Patañjali . The vivekakhyāti occurs when a Yoga Practitioner diligently completes the eight steps, the final being Samādhi, the total concentration of citta. However, the Samādhi practice or stage itself goes through 7 progressions, the final being nirbīja Samādhi. For the entire understanding of Yogasūtras and the eight-fold path, one should study Patañjali Code by Dr. Neel Kulkarni. However, it is necessary to state the relevant Sūtras and their meaning showing the arrival at vivekakhyāti.
द्रष्टृदृश्यय ोः संय ग हेयहेतोः॥२.१७॥
Patanjali Yoga Sutra 2.17: Draṣṭṛdṛśyayoḥ saṁyogo heyahetuḥ|
The conjunction between the Draṣṭṛ (Soul) and the dṛśya (knowable world) is the cause of pain.
