parents. When a family is under stress, social isolation contributes to stress,
thereby increasing the risk of child neglect.
ACTIVITY 10.1
1. Explain how space for parents and staff is vital in designing an early childhood physical environment.
2. Analyse the space allocated in early childhood setting to support staff and teachersÊ competencies in working with young children and parents.
3. Conduct an interview with parents who send their young child to a childcare centre. Find out what are the things they like and dislike about the childcare.
• A quality early childhood programme would cater for adults by providing a meeting space for confidential dialogue and communication between staff and parents. Parents and staff value early childhood setting that gives them sense of being home and being able to provide excellent care and service.
• Although a quality area for young children is important and the environment young children are presented with will make a big difference in their lives, areas of convenience for parents and staff are also essential for helping young children to promote their overall development.
• Parents value homely, welcoming and inviting facilities that display a positive feeling of the space. Thus, parents play an important role in the set- up of an early childhood setting. They should be encouraged to be part of the setting because they are an active support in early childhood programmes and the best sources of information about quality of care their young child are receiving.
• Creating personal spaces for parents is a big part of making the environment of early childhood setting more peaceful for family members. The space should encourage positive outcome and allow parents to set down their young childÊs belongings.
