160 TOPIC 10 PROVISIONS FOR ADULTS
10.2 THE IMPORTANCE OF SPACE FOR
PARENTS AND STAFF
As discussed earlier, early childhood environment should always be welcoming and include all family members and staff. It helps to build relationships between staff and parents as well as with young children. A conducive space for parents and staff may say a lot more about the centre as early childhood setting that cares about young childrenÊs well-being. Simple things like plants or water dispenser send the message that the centre cares about the parents or their family members. By creating a welcoming, safe, and friendly atmosphere, and dedicating space for parent and staff use, early childhood setting encourages relationships between staff members and parents. Thus, physical environment or space for parents and staff is important to early childhood setting for the following reasons, such as:
(a) It provides a positive feeling towards the centre;
(b) It is the way to show parents how important and special they are;
(c) It develops parentsÊ confidence in the centre;
(d) It allows parents to settle down before allowing their young child to walk to the centre or classroom;
(e) It provides opportunity for parents to discover about the centre, staff and their young childÊs progress;
(f) It provides a space for parents to discuss with staff about their young childÊs development;
(g) It creates stronger relationships between parents and staff;
(h) Staff will feel valued and will put more effort into carrying out their duties;
(i) It boosts work performance, creativity and creates stronger bonds among staff;
(j) It allows staff to discuss issues and performance tasks;
(k) It helps staff relieve stress throughout the working day; and
(l) It promotes emotional and physical well-being among staff.
