10.1.3 Observation Areas
This area allows parents to observe their young children playing with other children or learning in a centre or classroom. Observation area is a place where parents could watch their young children in class. This space should have glass windows into classrooms from hallways. A number of video cameras can be provided in the classrooms. Observation areas are an explicit young child abuse prevention strategy. Having many eyes on staff and young children contributes to the certainty that children will not be ignored while in the setting. The areas, however, have several other benefits as well. They facilitate communication and learning between parents and staff. Staff and parents can use the spaces to observe young childrenÊs behaviour together. Staff or educators may demonstrate alternative approaches to handling challenging behavioural problems or show parents what otherwise might be difficult to communicate.
Observation areas afford the opportunity for parents to see and compare their young child with other children of the same age, which can be helpful for getting parents to understand that their young child has a developmental delay or that his or her behaviour is age-appropriate. Observation areas are also important for staff and educators to help nurture the social and emotional development of young children. For example, when a staff or teacher is concerned about the behaviour of a young child, she may watch the child and discuss strategies for addressing the childÊs issues. Or in a different situation, the staff or educators may use the observation areas to gather broad information about young childrenÊs progress and performance. It provides a holistic picture of young childrenÊs experiences, behaviour, development and learning.
