TOPIC 2 DIMENSIONS OF YOUNG CHILDREN’S SETTING 
31
(e) Literacy Corner
This corner (see Figure 2.6) is to foster language and literacy skills in children. As language is critical for success, children need to learn language to perform better in school later. Materials such as word cards, labels, books, posters, words chart, signboard, toys and dramatic props can be placed at this corner to allow children to explore the literacy environment. This area allows children to practise recognising letters, reading and expressing their ideas about the world around them. Creating a literacy rich environment at the literacy corner will make it possible to provide children with emergent literacy experiences.

(f) Art and Craft Corner
This corner (see Figure 2.7) provides great opportunities for children to express their emotions, ideas and creativity. This area allows children to experience different textures and use different materials to create their own work. Through art and craft activities, children develop their fine motor skills and improve their hand-eye coordination. Children also learn to create and appreciate visual aesthetics through multi-sensory skills.
