The Forgotten Preservation Site of Knowledge : Taebaeksan History Archive
Since the paper-based Sil-lok(The Veritable Records of Joseon) were weak to damage from foreign invasions and natural
disasters, The Sil-lok were kept in five separate buildings across the country as a safe place to store them, one of which
is the Taebaeksan History Archives, located in the Taebaek Mountains of Bonghwa, Gyeongbuk. Over time, most of the
archives have been restored, but the Taebaeksan History Archive is the only one that has not been fixed and remains
neglected.
The site is located in a valley at a lower height than the Taebaek Mountain Archives site for accessibility reasons. The
site, located at the end of a minor road, is hidden in the valley, which is only visible if you deliberately drive deep into the
valley. It is similar to the way how our ancestors chose the Historical Archives site, located deep in the mountains, to
keep the books safe.
